My Latest Obsession: The Polka Dot Shirt
July 18, 2011 § 1 Comment
Paul Smith is the master of men’s prints. For his F/W 11 collection, he elevated the humble polka dot to high fashion status by randomly scattering them in shades of creme across plain, dark shirts. The effect recalled Chemistry diagrams of gas particles moving through space, giving the print a life beyond the mundane uniformity of most polka dot patterns.
The last time polka dots caught my attention was at the Commes des Garcon’s F/W 10 runway show, where a pair of ebullient polka dot suits came down the runway worn with brightly colored polka dot socks and hoods that at once recalled Antarctica and Kenny from South Park. One of the suits carried polka dots made from a black and white checkered material, giving the look a playful texture.
Luckily, as fall is fast approaching, retailers are starting to offer the polka dot Paul Smith shirt as well as the rest of the F/W 11 collection. You can find at least one of the polka dot looks on Mr. Porter right now.
